PIPE BREAK RULES

Welcome to the Sewers of New York City. You are stuck below-ground competing to be the first to get out above ground, to enjoy the New York nightlife. Choose your path wisely and watch out for explosions!

Goals of the Game:

  • Get through the sewer and escape to the nightclub before your opponent and you win!

  • Place pipes (by drawing and placing Build cards) to create a path to crawl through. Attach

  • pipes using the connected ends. You can only crawl through pipes that are connected. If you

  • reach a pipe that is disconnected, your forward progress stops.

  • There are several shapes of pipes in the pipe deck, make sure you are strategic about your

  • connections.

  • And of course, destroy your opponent's pipes (by placing Boom cards on top of them)!

Set up:

  • Place the board down and sort the cards into Build cards (cards with a wrench on one side and a pipe on the other) and Boom cards (cards with an explosion on both sides).

  • Place the Build cards pipe-side down, in a stack on top of the wrench on the right side of the board.

  • Place the Boom cards in a stack on the ‘POP’ graffiti on the right side of the board.

  • Choose a side, red or blue. You cannot go into the opponent’s side, but both players can

  • play in the yellow area and travel through any pipes there.

  • To start the game, place the Alligator and the Rat on the start square (the sewer grate at the

  • bottom of the board).

  • Choose Alligator or Rat and let the race begin! The youngest player goes first.

Turns & Gameplay:

  • At the start of every turn, draw a card from the top of the Build pile and place it on the board. If you forget to draw before you roll the die – oops, you just lost your chance to draw a Build card!

  • Playing Build Cards

  • After drawing your Build card, turn it over to expose the pipe on the bottom. There are four pipe variations:

  •  Straight pipe that allows a two-way outlet

  • L-shaped pipe that allows a two-way outlet and a two-way change of direction

  • T-shaped pipe that allows a three-way outlet and a three-way change of direction

  • Plus-shaped pipe that allows a four-way outlet and a four-way change of direction

  • Place the pipe on the board, inside a square on the grid. The card must be placed face up, showing the drawing of the pipe. To move through the pipes, they must be connected to the ends of other pipes. Build cards can only be placed on spaces that are your side of the board, or in the yellow strip in the middle of the board.

  • Build cards may be used to lay new pipe, or to ‘clear’ an explosion.

  • When you use a Build card to remove an explosion, the Boom card is removed from the

  • board, returning that square to its original condition at the start of the game (either a blank square or a preset pipe). The Build card used to remove the explosion is also used up in the process and does not get placed on the board.

  • Build cards may not be placed on top of previously placed Build cards, nor on top of brick squares, nor on top of the preset pipes drawn on the board.

  • Build cards may not be moved; once they are placed, they remain in that location and orientation unless they are removed by an explosion from a Boom card.

  • If there is no room to place a pipe to create a viable path, you must place the card somewhere on the board to be used in the future, or use it to remove an explosion (a Boom card).

Rolling the die:

  •  After you play your Build card, roll the die (roll once each turn):

  • If you roll a number, move that number of squares through your connected pipes. You can only move through connected pipes on your side (or in the yellow strip); you cannot move into or across a blank space, brick wall, or explosion. If you don’t have connected pipes to move along, your forward progress stops.
